Pangea Day is a global day of films, music and speakers that will be held simultaneously on May 10, 2008 in gathering places around the world. Inspired by the 2006 TED Prize wish of Jehane Noujaim, Pangea Day endeavors to bring the world together and promote understanding and tolerance. Pangea Day is a celebration of what unites us, rather than what divides us, via films made by the world for the world.  

On May 10th, millions of people all over the world will come together to watch a 4-hour program of short films, coupled with talks from CNN’s Christiane Amanpour and Queen Noor of Jordan, and with special musical guests. Through the Friends of Pangea Day page, anyone, anywhere can sign up and host their own Pangea Day event or attend an event in their local community. 

Nokia actively supports the Pangea Day mission by connecting people across the globe. Through the power of mobile technology, Nokia gives people a voice as well as platforms to communicate and share every day. For the Pangea Day broadcast on May 10th, Nokia made it possible for people to capture their stories by distributing free video-enabled Nokia mobile devices to film schools and refugee camps, where stories of universal human truths—like love, laughter, sorrow or hope— transcend background and place to bring people closer together. 

Nokia organized the 2008 Nokia Mobile Filmmaking Awards which ran from March 19 to April 30. During that period people could submit their short videos to ovi.com/pangeaday. On May 6th, Nokia announced the five finalists in the 2008 Nokia Mobile Filmmaking Awards which will be screened during the Pangea Day broadcast. The winners will be flown to Los Angeles to attend one of the live Pangea Day events on Saturday, May 10th. In addition to the trip to the Los Angeles event, the winner will receive a mobile filmmaking trip of a lifetime to the Rwandan Gorilla Reserve and a production budget to record their trip.  

Though submissions for the 2008 Nokia Mobile Filmmaking Awards have closed, images and films will live on at www.ovi.com/pangeaday where you can continue to share your experiences about this special day.

Nokia unveiled a bunch of exciting new devices and services today at the opening of the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. 

Reaffirming our leadership in convergence, we announced the Nokia N96, Nokia N78, Nokia 6220 classic and Nokia 6210 Navigator, which variously offer location-based and multimedia experiences such as pedestrian navigation, geotagging, movie viewing, and media sharing.

On the services side we announced the Beta version of Nokia Maps 2.0, with multimedia city guides, satellite images and a redesigned user interface. Nokia Maps 2.0 adds ‘Walk’, a pedestrian focused navigation component, while still offering ‘Drive’, a world class car navigation system. ‘Walk’ efficiently guides you from A to B with visual turn-by-turn guidance and information about surrounding buildings, streets and pathways through parks.

We also unveiled the next step towards our Ovi environment by introducing ‘Share on Ovi’, a personal media sharing community that makes it easy to upload, manage and share personal media. ‘Share on Ovi’ is designed for more than 100 different media types and offers unlimited storage and unlimited monthly uploads.
