kamppi-trial.jpgNokia today announces the launch of a mobile indoor positioning trial at Kamppi Shopping Center in Helsinki Finland. The roll out of the new indoor location service marks the second phase of an ongoing research project which began in March 2009 in partnership with Kamppi Center Investments Oy (EFM Suomi Oy).

In addition to indoor maps, discount vouchers, and information services, the mobile indoor positioning tool will allow shoppers to track their position inside Kamppi Shopping Center and pinpoint their location on indoor maps. Shoppers can also share their location with friends via an SMS link.

To try the new mobile indoor positioning tool, users with a web enabled S60 device can download it at http://kamppi.nokia.mobi and by selecting ‘positioning’. The trial application can also be downloaded from Nokia Beta Labs.

“The results from the trial so far have been extremely positive; since March the indoor maps, vouchers and information service attracted over 30,000 hits and had more than 6,500 unique users. With the launch of mobile indoor positioning we are not only conducting a unique large scale experiment but aim to demonstrate the capability and potential uses for indoor positioning services, as well as bringing consumers a different and exciting experience. Kamppi Shopping Center provides us with an excellent place to test this,” said Christian Prehofer, senior manager and research project leader, Nokia Research Center.

“As Kamppi Shopping Center provides a variety of services from transport links to leisure activities, restaurants and shopping, we have a vast number of visitors everyday. Building on the popular indoor maps, vouchers and information services trial with indoor positioning means we can bring even more unique and new experiences to our customers,” said Tuomas Sahi, Managing Director of EFM Suomi Oy.

“I feel honored to have been invited to serve in this role”, said Lee Williams. “This is a great opportunity to directly help deliver on the promise of the foundation, working with the stakeholders and prospective members who are so committed to make this initiative a success. To me, there can be no more exciting role in the mobile software world than to lead the Symbian Foundation.”

52 companies have now announced their support for the planned Symbian Foundation, including 8 device manufacturers, 7 semiconductor companies, 9 mobile network operators, 27 services and software companies and 1 financial services provider.  More details are available at www.symbianfoundation.org, where hundreds of other organizations have registered their interest in learning more about the Symbian Foundation, since plans were announced in June 2008.

As previously announced, the plans for the establishment of the Symbian Foundation and royalty-free licensing of foundation software are:

1. The acquisition of Symbian Limited by Nokia, expected to close in Q4, 2008, subject to regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions.
2. Software assets are contributed to the foundation, including Symbian OS™ and S60 by Nokia, UIQ technology by Motorola and Sony Ericsson and MOAP(S) by NTT DOCOMO and Fujitsu.
3. This contributed software will be available under a royalty-free license to foundation members from the first day of Symbian Foundation operations, expected 1H 2009.
4. The Foundation will work to unify the platform, with the first unified foundation release expected in 2009.
5. The foundation will work to make the platform available in open source by June 2010 (two years from the Symbian Foundation announcement)

Lee Williams will remain in his current role as head of the S60 organization in Nokia’s Devices business until January 1, 2009, or until such time as the foundation and its leadership team are in place and operational. The operation of the foundation remains subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals.

Symbian and all Symbian based trademarks and logos are trademarks of Symbian Software Limited.  The operation of the proposed Symbian Foundation remains subject to regulatory approvals.  Until such approvals are obtained, and the Symbian Foundation has become fully operational, Symbian Software Limited retains exclusive responsibility for all licensing and marketing activities related to Symbian OS.

Come be part of the story at Nokia Conversations

June 24, 2008 - NokiaPressServices, Tags: , , , ,

The way corporations interact with their customers has changed drastically in the past few years. The era of mass marketing and mass communications is over. Customers have been increasingly taking up widespread social media tools on the web and turned into the message creators, driving the conversations around the products and services they use.

Therefore, corporations must join customers in these conversations. We need to be able to speak openly, honestly, and in a personal tone. We need to listen carefully without being defensive. We need to respect those who speak to us and about us. We need to understand that we no longer control the conversation but are a part of it.

For a few years now, Nokia have been participating in the conversation with customers through various efforts, ranging from blogs by people who work on S60, outreach to Nseries aficionados, support discussion boards, and a site to download and discuss early state software from Nokia.

Nokia’s most recent addition has been Nokia Conversations, a site dedicated to the stories in and around the Nokia neighborhood. It’s not about the tech and specs, but about the people, products, and ideas behind the news. Nokia Conversations highlights the best and most important conversations about and around Nokia, whether it comes from inside Nokia or outside. Our articles also add a mix of various elements, such as videos and photos.

If you want to learn more, go and visit Nokia Conversation and join in the conversation.
