Nokia collaborates with Wild Wonders of Europe

July 23, 2009 - NokiaPressServices, Tags: , , , ,

Nokia has entered into a collaboration agreement with a pan-European photographic initiative, Wild Wonders of Europe. This one-of-a-kind project involves nearly 70 of Europe’s top photographers from 18 countries who will undertake over 100 assignments in around 48 European countries. The initiative, which began in early 2008, will be the world’s most spectacular wildlife and nature show ever seen. Nokia is proud to collaborate with this unique project and help the photographers whilst on their missions by providing devices that will allow them to stay in touch, capture images, upload imagery and video content and tell their story which can be seen via Ovi Share.

So far there are already more than 50 online galleries showcasing many of the 150,000 images from the project, blogs from the photographers in the field and a very popular monthly photo competition on the Wild Wonders of Europe website with interactive content and daily updates; social media networks, podcasts and video diaries. Plans for 2010 – 2012 include a major outdoor exhibition tour to all key European cities, a large-format coffee-table book in multiple languages and AV shows throughout Europe.

“We are teaming up with the very best partners in each field and with Nokia we have certainly achieved this. We are delighted that Nokia has joined the programme and can see them helping us reach our goal of revealing the amazing richness and variety of our own European natural heritage to the 700 million Europeans and to the rest of the world,” said Staffan Widstrand, Managing Director, Wild Wonders of Europe.

Nokia’s media service, available in 170 countries, honored for Technology Innovation

The Nokia Ovi Store has been recognized with a Meffy Award for Technology Innovation. The Meffys are given out by the Mobile Entertainment Forum (MEF), a global trade association for the mobile media industry, to recognize products, services, apps and projects that are leading the mobile entertainment industry into the future.

The Ovi Store is Nokia’s one-stop shop for digital media, where mobile users from more than 170 countries download and use applications, games, videos, podcasts, productivity tools, Web and location-based services and much more. The honor underlines Nokia’s work to bring unique content and services to customer devices, including kSnap & translate, which allows users to photograph printed text in 11 languages and view translations in real-time.  A variety of other innovative offerings can be found at http://store.ovi.com, including content from the Associated Press, EA, Facebook, Fox Mobile, and MySpace.

The Meffys, held in association with Nokia for the third year running, were held at a sold-out event in London June 23 and recognized organizations from eight countries.

Said Marco Argenti, Nokia Vice President, head of Media and Games: “We are honored to receive this recognition from the Mobile Entertainment Forum. Nokia’s goal is to bring media and entertainment to the masses, using our global presence and brand to understand and reach the uniqueness of local markets, and advanced technology such as our relevance engine to surface the right content on Ovi Store, in several languages and across more than 75 devices targeted to multiple customer segments.”

Rimma Perelmuter, MEF Executive Director, said: “Congratulations to Ovi by Nokia for personalizing the app store experience and making its rich catalogue accessible to the millions of Nokia customers around the world.”

Perelmuter noted the importance of recognizing innovation in times of uncertainty. “…MEF is proud to celebrate a 32 billion USD industry whose relevance and focus continues to inspire innovation and growth.  The 2009 Meffys nominees are a testament to the industry’s robustness and the central role that mobile is playing in engaging and entertaining consumers around the world.”
